What does a business website cost in New Zealand in 2026?

A small-business website in New Zealand runs NZ$1,500 to NZ$8,000 from a freelancer and NZ$5,000 to NZ$30,000 from an agency in 2026, with NZ$6,000 typical. Shopify stores start around NZ$10,000 locally. Here is what separates those numbers, what the time zone honestly means, and where a build from India at NZ$2,500 sits.

A business website in New Zealand costs NZ$1,500 to NZ$8,000 from a freelancer and NZ$5,000 to NZ$30,000 and up from an agency in 2026, with NZ$6,000 the typical figure for a small business. Mid-sized and corporate sites run NZ$6,000 to NZ$50,000 and beyond, with NZ$12,000 typical. Shopify stores built locally start around NZ$10,000 and run past NZ$50,000; custom ecommerce reaches NZ$150,000. Our own New Zealand business websites land between NZ$2,500 and NZ$6,000, and the rest of this post explains what each of those numbers buys.

One honest note before the numbers: New Zealand's pricing data is thinner than Australia's or the UK's. Several of the figures below are agency-page snapshots rather than a market survey, and they are labelled as typical ranges for that reason. They are still the ranges a quote should be held against.

What separates NZ$1,500 from NZ$30,000

At the freelancer end you are usually buying a template with your logo, colours and copy placed into it. New Zealand is unusual in that sub-NZ$1,500 sites are marketed openly as budget options rather than treated as a warning sign, and for a business that needs something live this month that can be the right purchase — as long as you know what you are buying and plan a proper rebuild once there is traction. At the agency end the site is designed around your business: a design system built for the brand, a content management system you can genuinely edit, and the technical work that decides whether the site loads fast on a phone and whether Google can read it.

Between the two sit the hourly rates that generate every quote. New Zealand freelance rates span NZ$15 to NZ$170 an hour, with senior Auckland developers at NZ$140 to NZ$200; agencies bill NZ$100 to NZ$200 an hour depending on the city, Auckland highest and Christchurch lowest. A fixed quote is one of those rates multiplied by an estimate of hours, which is why the same brief priced by three studios comes back as three numbers. Ask how many hours a quote funds; the answer explains the price faster than the proposal does.

Ecommerce: why a Shopify store starts at NZ$10,000 here

A store costs more than a brochure site for concrete reasons. Product catalogues need proper structure to show up in search, checkout has to work with real payment gateways and shipping rules, and most stores need at least one integration — stock, accounting, a marketplace feed. In New Zealand there is a further layer: local payment methods such as buy-now-pay-later and bank-transfer gateways are expected by customers and each one is integration work, which is part of why custom ecommerce for a large retailer reaches NZ$150,000. Our New Zealand Shopify builds typically run NZ$4,000 to NZ$12,000, with large catalogues and custom platforms quoted higher and migrations quoted separately once we have seen the catalogue.

Booking systems, customer portals, anything with logins and business logic specific to how you operate — these get called websites and are software. The typical New Zealand custom software project sits around NZ$100,000; our custom builds for New Zealand clients run NZ$55,000 to NZ$70,000 by complexity, scoped in phases so you can stop after phase one and keep what is built.

Where a build from India sits in the New Zealand market

Our New Zealand business websites land between NZ$2,500 and NZ$6,000 depending on page count and complexity — at the floor of the agency band and under the NZ$6,000 typical. A small domestic market means limited local agency capacity and pricing to match; we price from an Indian cost base instead, and the saving reflects it. The figure is a custom build at an Indian cost base, published on our pricing page so you can read it before you contact anyone. Our website and SEO prices for New Zealand come from direct market research; our other prices are carried over from the ratios we found in the US until we gather local numbers, and we will tell you which is which if you ask.

Every build ships with a full handover — code, hosting account, domain and analytics in your name from day one — a CMS walkthrough recording, and documentation another developer could pick up. Timelines are three to five weeks from kickoff for a straightforward business site and six to twelve for larger builds with bigger catalogues or more integrations.

The time zone, stated plainly

New Zealand is the furthest time zone we work with: six and a half hours ahead of India, seven and a half during New Zealand daylight saving from September to April. Your morning is our late evening, and there is very little live overlap in a normal working day. We build the engagement around that from day one rather than promise it away — a detailed written brief instead of a kickoff call, a daily written update, weekly clickable builds you review in your own time, and calls booked in advance for the window that works. Build work suits this better than most, because design, development and testing happen between calls anyway. If your project genuinely needs constant real-time back-and-forth, we will say so plainly. The full working arrangement is on our New Zealand page.

GST, invoices and the costs after launch

New Zealand's non-resident supplier rules carry an explicit business-to-business exception: if you are GST-registered and using our services for your business, we do not add the 15% GST to the invoice. Give us your GST number and we reference it. Invoices are in New Zealand dollars as an export of services from India, with no Indian GST added, and payment goes to local NZD account details held through a licensed provider, so it is an ordinary domestic transfer. New Zealand payment terms have shifted towards seven to fifteen days, and we work to a staged schedule you see before you commit.

The build is the beginning of the cost of owning a site. Hosting and a domain are small and recurring; updates and small content changes are usually a modest monthly arrangement. If you want the site found, New Zealand SEO retainers for a small or medium business run NZ$1,200 to NZ$5,000 a month, with anything under NZ$900 described locally as limited in scope; our retainers run NZ$900 to NZ$1,800 a month, with six months the honest minimum. If you also sell across the Tasman, we wrote up what a website costs in Australia in 2026 so the two markets can be compared side by side.

If you already have a site and want to know whether it needs replacing or repairing, run it through our free website grader first — it checks speed, structure and search readiness in about a minute, and the result is yours whatever you decide.

Red flags at the cheap end

No real CMS, so every text change means paying the developer again. No attention to Core Web Vitals, so the site is slow and both visitors and Google penalise it. No documentation or handover, so if the freelancer disappears you cannot get into your own site. Every site we build is handed over in your name, so that last failure cannot happen to you whoever you eventually work with.
