How much does SEO cost per month in Australia in 2026?

Australian SEO runs A$800 to A$1,500 a month at the entry level, A$1,500 to A$3,000 for a small business and A$3,000 to A$8,000 for mid-market in 2026, and anything under about A$500 is flagged by the market itself as unlikely to cover real work. Here is what each band funds, the new AI-search line item, and what our A$1,000-a-month retainer includes.

In 2026, SEO in Australia costs A$800 to A$1,500 a month at the entry level, A$1,500 to A$3,000 a month for a small business, A$3,000 to A$8,000 for a mid-market company and A$8,000 to A$30,000 and beyond at enterprise scale. A one-off audit runs from A$399 for a light review to A$10,000 for a full technical one, with A$2,500 typical. Anything under about A$500 a month is flagged by Australian agencies themselves as unlikely to cover real work. Our own Australian retainers start at A$1,000 a month; what that buys is further down.

A retainer is a monthly allocation of hours, tools and outreach budget, pointed at whichever part of your site needs it most that month. Two agencies quoting the same A$2,000 can be selling very different quantities of work, and the only way to compare them is to ask what the hours go on. This post is built so you can.

Australian SEO pricing bands, 2026

Indicative, dated to August 2026, from published Australian pricing guides. Most are written by agencies, so read the ranges as market consensus rather than audited data.

Typical Australian SEO retainer pricing, 2026
TierTypical monthly feeWhat the hours usually go on
Entry / localA$800 – A$1,500Technical fixes, local listings, a handful of pages
Small businessA$1,500 – A$3,000Ongoing technical work, a few pages a month, light link work
Mid-marketA$3,000 – A$8,000 (typical A$6,000)A content programme, digital PR, continuous technical work
EnterpriseA$8,000 – A$30,000+ (typical A$15,000)Multiple markets or brands, dedicated team, developer time

What each band actually funds

At A$800 to A$1,500 the retainer covers essentials: fixing what a crawl turns up, tidying titles and headings, making sure the site is fast and indexable, and keeping local listings accurate. Towards A$3,000 there is room for content — a few well-targeted pages a month — and genuine outreach. What the small-business band cannot fund is a content programme and a link campaign at the same time; an agency promising both at A$1,200 is promising something the fee cannot pay for.

From A$3,000 upward SEO starts to look like a programme rather than maintenance: steady content output, a digital PR effort that earns real mentions, and continuous technical work on a site large enough to keep generating it. Enterprise retainers are mostly coordination — several markets or brands, and developer time to get changes shipped through someone else's release process. If you are buying in that band, the questions are about process and reporting far more than about price.

The A$500 red flag, and why the real entry is A$800

Australian agency sources converge on the same warning: SEO under about A$500 a month rarely covers real work, and the cheap link packages that fill the gap can do lasting damage to a domain. The genuine entry point for credible ongoing work is presented as A$800 to A$1,500. The source is worth noting — these are agencies describing their own floor — but the arithmetic supports it. Senior Australian freelance developers charge A$180 to A$300 an hour and agencies A$150 to A$330; at those rates A$500 buys two or three hours a month before tools are paid for, and three hours cannot fix a site, write for it and earn links to it. Below the floor you are usually buying reporting on work that is not happening.

Australian pricing guides now list an AI-search or generative engine optimisation retainer at A$2,500 to A$8,000 a month as its own category, which tells you how quickly the work has become real. On queries that trigger an AI Overview, organic click-through has fallen sharply, and being cited inside the answer now matters as much as the ranking beneath it. The work — entity and schema markup, direct-answer content structure, building brand mentions rather than only links — shares most of its foundation with good SEO, so you should ask whether it is inside a retainer or sold on top. We wrote up what AI Overviews mean for an SEO budget separately; the short version is that a 2026 retainer should report citations as well as positions.

What A$1,000 a month buys from us

Our Australian retainers run A$1,000 to A$4,500 a month by scope and competitiveness, and a one-off technical audit starts at A$700. The starting figure sits above the floor the Australian market itself describes and inside its credible entry band, for a reason we would rather state than imply: the work is senior, and it is delivered from India, where the cost base is lower. Australian agency rates run high relative to the size of the market, largely because the domestic talent pool is small and expensive, and our cost base is Indian. The full Australian price list is on our pricing page.

Whatever the fee, the retainer covers six streams; the fee decides how much of each you get per month, never which ones exist:

  1. Technical foundation — crawlability, indexation, speed, Core Web Vitals, schema, internal linking
  2. Keyword and intent mapping — the terms you can realistically win in Australian search, and a plain list of the ones you cannot
  3. Content that answers the question, in the direct-answer structure AI systems extract from
  4. Generative engine optimisation — entity, schema and brand-mention work, inside the retainer rather than sold on top
  5. Digital PR and link acquisition — earned placements only; nothing that risks the domain
  6. Reporting — rankings, traffic, conversions and AI-citation tracking every month, with the reason attached when a month goes badly

The minimum sensible engagement is six months. On a new domain, first movement typically takes four to six months and compounding traffic six to twelve; an established site with authority moves faster. Six months is the shortest period over which the work can honestly be judged, and a three-month SEO contract is a three-month wait.

GST, withholding and the time zone

Under the ATO's business-to-business rule for non-resident suppliers, we do not add GST to the invoice if you are GST-registered and buying for your business — give us your ABN and it goes on the paperwork. Invoices are in Australian dollars as an export of services from India, with no Indian GST added, and payment goes to local AUD account details held through a licensed provider, so it is an ordinary domestic transfer. On withholding tax, the Australia–India trade agreement removed Australian withholding on payments to Indian suppliers for remote technical services; classification can still depend on how an engagement is described, so we flag it if we think a question applies and provide a certificate of tax residence. The full mechanics are on our Australia page.

Sydney and Melbourne run four and a half hours ahead of India, five and a half during daylight saving from October to April; Perth runs two and a half hours ahead. For the east coast that leaves three to four hours of live overlap in your afternoon, and SEO suits that better than most work — audits, content, outreach and reporting run on a written daily update, with calls booked into the window. If you are budgeting for a site as well as for search, we wrote up what a website costs in Australia in 2026 so the two numbers can sit side by side.

Before you compare two Australian SEO quotes, ask each agency for the hours behind the fee and who works them; which of the six streams are in scope this month and which are add-ons; to see every link earned, with the page it points to; who owns the content, the accounts and the reporting if you leave; and whether AI citations are reported alongside rankings. Treat any ranking guarantee as the end of the conversation. If you would like a starting point that costs nothing, run your site through our free website grader — it checks speed, structure and search readiness in about a minute, and shows what a retainer would have to fix first.

Questions this post gets asked

How much does SEO cost per month in Australia?

In 2026, A$800 to A$1,500 a month at the entry level, A$1,500 to A$3,000 for a small business, A$3,000 to A$8,000 for mid-market and A$8,000 to A$30,000 or more at enterprise scale. Our Australian retainers run A$1,000 to A$4,500 a month.

Is A$500 a month enough for SEO in Australia?

Australian agencies flag it as the level below which the fee rarely covers real work, with A$800 to A$1,500 the credible entry point. At senior Australian rates, A$500 buys two or three hours a month before tools — too few to fix a site, write for it and earn links. The cheap link packages sold at that price can also damage a domain.

Do you charge GST to Australian businesses?

Not if you are GST-registered and buying for your business — the ATO's business-to-business rule for non-resident suppliers applies. Give us your ABN and we note it on the invoice. Invoices are in AUD and paid to local Australian account details, so it is a domestic transfer.

What does an SEO audit cost in Australia?

From A$399 for a light review to A$10,000 for a full technical audit in 2026, with A$2,500 typical. Our technical audits start at A$700, and the findings are yours to take to any agency, including one that is not us.
