How much does SEO cost in the US in 2026?

A small US business typically pays $1,500 to $3,200 a month for full-service SEO in 2026, and anything under about $500 is flagged by the market itself as unable to deliver. Here is the full range by tier, and what sits inside our own $1,200-a-month starting price.

In 2026, a small US business typically pays $1,500 to $3,200 a month for full-service SEO. A more comprehensive programme runs $2,500 to $5,000, mid-market companies budget $5,000 to $10,000, and enterprise retainers start around $10,000 and climb past $50,000. A one-off technical audit sits anywhere from $500 to $15,000 depending on who does it and how large the site is. Those are the ranges the 2026 pricing guides converge on, and they are the ranges you should hold any quote against — including ours, which starts at $1,200 a month.

Two things about that spread matter more than any single number in it. First, the range is wide because the work is wide: "SEO" covers everything from fixing a broken sitemap to running a monthly digital PR programme, and a retainer is really a bundle of hours pointed at whichever of those your site needs. Second, the market has a floor. Several independent 2026 sources flag any retainer under roughly $500 a month as structurally unable to deliver — too few hours for real work — and that floor is the most useful fact on this page.

The 2026 US ranges, tier by tier

The figures below are indicative, dated to August 2026, and drawn from published US pricing guides rather than from any single agency's rate card. Rates move; treat them as a snapshot for budgeting.

Typical US SEO pricing, 2026
TierTypical monthly costWho it usually fits
Local-only SEOfrom $750A single-location service business competing in one city
Small business, full-service$1,500 – $3,200A business with a modest site, a few core services, regional reach
Small business, comprehensive$2,500 – $5,000The same business, with a content programme and link acquisition added
Mid-market$5,000 – $10,000Multi-location or multi-product companies with a real content operation
Competitive verticals$7,500 – $20,000+Legal, finance, health and other sectors where every term is contested
Enterprise$10,000 – $50,000+Large sites, multiple markets, dedicated teams
One-off technical audit$500 – $15,000Freelancers $300 – $2,000; agencies $1,000 – $5,000

Averaged across everything a US business might buy under the label, the market lands around $3,199 a month. That average is useful for one thing only: if a quote is a fraction of it, you should be able to see exactly which hours have been removed to get there.

Why the range is so wide

Five variables move an SEO quote up or down, and none of them is the agency's mood. Content — who writes it and how much — is the single largest line item in most retainers; the rest follow:

  • Competitiveness — a plumber in Denver and a personal-injury firm in Los Angeles are buying different amounts of work under the same word
  • Technical debt — a slow, poorly structured site needs months of fixes before content can perform at all
  • Locations and languages — each one is its own set of pages, citations and tracking
  • Content volume — who writes it, how much, how often
  • AI visibility — generative engine optimisation is now a real line of work, priced in or left out

The floor below which SEO stops being SEO

The most consistent finding in the 2026 pricing research was not a number at the top of the market but one at the bottom. Retainers under about $500 a month are flagged, repeatedly and by independent sources, as unable to deliver results. The reasoning is arithmetic rather than snobbery: at that price, once tools and reporting are paid for, there are only a handful of working hours left in the month, and a handful of hours cannot fix a site, write for it and earn links to it. What a $300 package usually buys is a rank-tracking dashboard and a monthly PDF, which is not the same thing as work.

What $1,200 a month buys from us

Our US retainers run $1,200 to $6,000 a month — small business at the lower end, mid-market above it — and a one-off technical audit starts at $900. The starting price was set deliberately above the market's own credibility floor and deliberately below the US typical, because both facts are true of the work: it is senior work, and it is delivered from India, where the cost base is lower. You can read the full US price list on our pricing page before you speak to anyone.

At any point in that range, the retainer covers the same six streams; what changes with the fee is how much of each you get per month:

  1. Technical foundation — crawlability, indexation, site speed, Core Web Vitals, schema and internal linking, done first because nothing else works until it does
  2. Keyword and intent mapping — the terms with buying intent you can realistically win, and an honest list of the ones you cannot
  3. Content that answers the question — written in a direct-answer structure, because that is what gets extracted into AI responses
  4. Generative engine optimisation — entity and schema work plus brand-mention building, since unlinked mentions correlate with AI citation far more strongly than backlinks do (0.664 against 0.218)
  5. Digital PR and link acquisition — earned placements and genuine outreach, never link farms or private networks
  6. Reporting that shows the truth — rankings, traffic, conversions and AI-citation tracking, with the reason attached when a month goes badly

The minimum sensible engagement is six months. That is not a lock-in; it is the shortest period over which the work can be judged, and anyone selling you a three-month SEO contract is selling you a three-month wait.

Where the saving comes from, and what it does not buy

Indian delivery runs roughly 60–80% below US agency rates for equivalent scope. That is real, and it is the obvious reason to have this conversation. What it does not buy you is a US-based account manager sitting in your time zone all day. If your business needs someone on call from nine to five Pacific, hire locally and pay the local rate — that is the honest advice, and we would rather give it before a contract than after.

Working across the time zones

India is nine and a half to ten and a half hours ahead of Eastern time depending on the season, which sounds like a wall and in practice is a handover. Our afternoon covers your morning — roughly 8am to noon ET is live overlap, and earlier still for the West Coast. Most SEO work is asynchronous anyway: audits, content, outreach and reporting do not need a meeting to happen. You get a daily written update so you always know where things stand, and calls are booked into the overlap window rather than assumed. The full working arrangement for US clients is on our United States page.

Paying an Indian company from the US

This is where US buyers expect friction and find almost none. Under the India–US tax treaty, payments for our services are not subject to the 30% US withholding, and we provide a completed Form W-8BEN-E so your accounts team can file the invoice cleanly. Invoices are in USD as a zero-rated export of services — no Indian GST is added. Payment goes to local US account details held through a licensed cross-border provider, so from your side it is an ordinary domestic transfer with no international wire fees.

How long before the money comes back

Set the expectation before the contract, not after. On a new domain, the first movement realistically takes four to six months, and compounding traffic arrives between six and twelve. An established site with existing authority moves faster. The numbers behind that caution are stark: across a dataset of more than two million pages, only 1.74% of newly published pages reached the top ten within their first year. SEO pays because it compounds, and compounding takes time — which is also why a retainer that cannot fund real monthly work never reaches the point where compounding starts.

There is one further shift to budget for. On queries that trigger an AI Overview, organic click-through has fallen sharply, and being cited inside the answer now matters as much as the ranking beneath it. We wrote up what that means for your SEO budget separately; the short version is that a 2026 retainer should be tracking citations, not just positions.

The smallest first step

A paid technical audit costs from $900, tells you exactly what a retainer would have to fix first, and is yours to take to any agency — including one that is not us. Ask any quote how many hours the fee funds, who works them, and whether you keep the accounts and content if you leave.

Questions this post gets asked

Is $1,200 a month enough for SEO in the US?

For a small business with a modest site and regional competition, yes — it clears the market's own credibility floor of roughly $500 a month with room for real technical, content and link work. For a competitive vertical or a multi-location company it is not, and we will say so on the first call rather than take the retainer and underdeliver.

What does a one-off SEO audit cost in the US?

Across the US market, $500 to $15,000 in 2026 — freelancers typically $300 to $2,000, agencies $1,000 to $5,000, with enterprise sites at the top. Our technical audits start at $900 and the findings are yours to act on with anyone.

Why is anything under $500 a month a red flag?

Because of the hours. Once tools and reporting are paid for, a $300 or $400 package leaves a few working hours a month, and that cannot fix a site, produce content and earn links. Multiple independent 2026 sources flag this floor; what such packages usually deliver is a dashboard and a PDF.

Do I have to withhold 30% tax when paying an Indian SEO company?

No. Under the India–US tax treaty, payments for our services are not subject to US withholding, and we provide a completed Form W-8BEN-E for your records. Invoices are in USD with no Indian GST added.

How long is the minimum contract?

Six months. It is the shortest period over which SEO work can honestly be judged, since first movement on a new domain typically takes four to six months. After that the retainer runs month to month.
